School Rules & Discipline Guidelines

Good discipline is fundamental to ensuring learning and progress. Our school’s philosophy on discipline is to transit every student to reach independence and self-discipline, grounded on sound values. What that means is all students must learn and take onus for their behaviours and the consequences of their actions.

We take a whole-school approach to discipline and articulate explicitly to our students the school rules and expectations at the start of every academic year. Please refer to the Student Handbook on what are expected of our students.

Our Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) drives the inculcation of appropriate values and behaviours. To build good character so that your child always does the right thing even when no one is watching, the school expects him/her to act in accordance with the school rules. Do go through the Student Handbook with your child and reinforce the significance of sound values and appropriate behaviours.

Singing the National Anthem and taking the Pledge

Students who are Singapore citizens must sing the National Anthem and take the Pledge. Students will take the Pledge with the right fist over the heart.
Non-citizens are to stand at attention to show respect during the flag raising and flag lowering ceremonies.

Attendance

All students must attend school during school days.
A medical certificate or letter from parents must be produced when a student is absent.
Students are to sit for all examinations and tests unless certified medically unfit by a doctor.
All students must report punctually for school by 7.30 am.
All students are to report punctually for and attend all lessons, e.g. remedial/ supplementary, enrichment and CCA sessions.

Wearing the prescribed uniform

Students are to wear the prescribed school uniform and modification to the uniform is not allowed.
Uniform and PE shirts are to be neatly worn. Wear PE attire only during days when there are PE lessons or CCA.
All P4 to P6 female students are to wear their skirt over their shorts when they come in their PE attire on days when they have PE, CCA or go on Learning Journeys. They will be in their school PE T-shirts and skirts (with shorts underneath) and will only remove their skirt during PE or CCA lessons. They are expected to put on their skirt after their PE or CCA lessons.
All personal name tags are to be ironed onto the pockets of all shirts and also on PE T-shirts. Name tags must be above the school badge.
Male students must be clean-shaven and neat in appearance.
Female students should tie their hair neatly. Only navy blue and black hair clips, hair-bands and/or ribbons are allowed. Dyeing or highlighting of hair is strictly not allowed.
Only white socks and shoes are allowed. Length of socks must be at least two fingers above the ankles. You may wear track shoes only during CCA or sports events.

Ornaments, Jewellery or Valuables

No ornaments or any form of jewellery are to be worn in school.
For female students, only small and simple ear-studs or earrings are allowed (no multiple earrings).
No valuables, expensive items, toys or sharp objects should be brought to school.

Safety in School

All students are not allowed to have in their possession any weapon. They are also not allowed to bring any weapon-like item, which can be used or intended to be used to cause harm to others. This is considered a serious offence.

Use of Mobile Phones/Electronic Devices in School

We strongly discourage students from bringing mobile phones or any expensive gadgets, e.g. smartwatch, to school.
Should your child bring such unauthorised gadgets/devices, it is his/her responsibility to ensure that they are kept away safely/out of sight and switched off at all times.
The school will not be liable for any loss of items.
Students are not allowed to use their mobile phones/ unauthorised devices in class or within the school compound.
School will have the right to confiscate any gadgets/devices if students are found to be flouting the regulation. For the first violation, the phone will be confiscated and stored in the General Office (GO) for safe-keeping until the end of the school day. Student will have to retrieve the phone from GO after school. For subsequent violation, the phone will be confiscated and the parent of the student can retrieve the phone from GO.

Student’s Conduct

A. Interaction with School Staff and Classmates

Be courteous and gracious at all times. Greet all teachers and staff when you see them.
Manage your emotions. Refrain from fighting.
Use proper language at all times.
You should not use vulgarities or abusive language. Do not insult/ humiliate/ embarrass anyone.

B. During Recess or Lunch

Walk to the canteen briskly.
Wash your hands before and after eating.
Queue up behind the yellow line when buying food.
Keep the tables clean for the next class to use.
Return all plates, bowls, cups and cutlery to their respective receptacles after eating/ drinking. Do a wipe down.
Eating is not allowed outside the canteen.
During recess, play only at areas designated by the school.
During lunch, stay indoors. Playing is not allowed outdoors due to the hot weather.

C. In the Classroom

Keep your classroom clean and tidy.
Pay attention to your teacher when he/she is teaching.
Raise your hands if you need to speak to the teacher.
Pack your bag according to the time-table and bring all books/ items as required by your teachers.
Hand in your work on time.
Record all homework in this handbook.
You are not allowed to leave the classroom without permission.
Look after your personal property. Do not leave your belongings, e.g. school bag, wallet, storybooks, etc, unattended.
Take your temperature if you are not feeling well and inform your teacher of your condition and your temperature reading.

D. Leaving the Classroom

Seek permission from your teachers.
Write your name on the board before you leave the class and erase it from the board when you return.
You are not allowed to leave the school grounds at any time without your teacher’s permission or approval from the General Office.

E. Using the Toilet Facilities

Walk to the toilet and avoid running at all times.
Flush the toilet after use.
Wash your hands after using the toilet.
Throw all litter into the rubbish bin. Inappropriate disposal of rubbish is considered an offence.
Playing is not allowed in the toilet.

F. Transition for MT lessons (to/from MT classrooms)

Queue up outside your class according to your MT classes.
Do not go to the toilet or canteen during this transition.
If you are going to the MT classrooms which are on the same level and block, wait outside the MT classrooms quietly and sit in twos.
If you are going to the pick-up points, proceed to the respective points and wait quietly for the rest of your classmates.

G. Dismissal at the end of the day

Walk as a class at all times.
If you are walking home, proceed to the respective gates with your teacher.
If you are taking the school bus, queue up for the school bus in the bus bay.
If you are walking home or taking the public transport, go straight home. Do not hang around at the playground, MRT stations, shopping malls, void decks or any other public places after school. Disciplinary measures will be meted out against those who infringe this rule.
No one is to remain in school without a teacher’s permission.

H. PE lessons

You are to be in PE attire and put on footwear at all times unless instructed by your teacher.
Use spectacles with plastic frames and plastic lenses if you need to.
For safety reasons, no ornaments are to be worn in school and especially during PE lessons.
Do not participate in PE lessons if you have medical exemptions. Inform the PE teacher of your medical exemption and the duration of the exemption. You must produce relevant documents, e.g. Medical Certificate, to support the exemption.
It is very important that you listen and follow all instructions given by your PE teacher.
If you injure yourself or feel unwell during PE lessons, alert your teacher immediately. The extent of your injury/illness will be assessed so that the next course of action can be taken, e.g. treatment provided by a certified First Aider.
You are not allowed to remain in the classroom during PE lessons. Please follow the class to the venue of the lesson.
Move indoors when the Lightning Warning System is flashing.
For any other health matters, please speak with your PE or Form Teacher.

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES

Disciplinary action will be taken against students who commit offences. Parents will be informed of their child’s misbehaviour in class/school and, if need be, will be invited to school to meet with the child’s teacher and Discipline Master for further conferencing. Some of the offences include:

Minor Offences

Repeated latecoming for school/ school activities.
Improper school attire, e.g. ankle socks, no name tag
Inappropriate general appearance, e.g. long hair or outlandish hairstyles for male students, untied long hair for female students, long fringe for female students, nail polish, long nails, henna,
Not bringing books to school, failure to do or submit work/ on time.
Disruptive behaviour during lesson.
Littering, not returning utensils in the canteen or eating outside the canteen
Wearing of jewellery, e.g. chains, bracelets.
Possession of items that cause nuisance, annoyance or distraction to other students or teachers.

Serious Offences

Repeated minor offence
Truancy/ skipping classes/ lessons
Possession of weapons or weapon-like items.
Rudeness, disrespect/ defiance to peers or staff
Use of vulgarity or abusive language (verbal or written)
Cheating in tests or examinations
Forgery, alteration of marks on test papers or report cards
Assault and/or threatening others with bodily harm
Bullying, gangsterism, fighting, theft, extorting money from others, instigating fights or disturbances
Vandalism, damaging school property
Use or possession of cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other prohibited materials
Sexual misconduct
Smoking, vaping or substance abuse
Arson, gambling, abuse of technology
Serious offences of cyber nature
Any acts that affects the school’s climate and image

Some possible disciplinary actions may include loss of privileges, e.g. apologies and restitution, confiscation of prohibited items, behavioural contract, time-out during recesses, ban from learning journey if safety is compromised, correction work order, detention, suspension from activities and/or school and caning.

All disciplinary actions taken against any misconduct will be recorded in the School Offence Module and will affect the Conduct Grade accordingly.
